REDIFFUSION

Rediffusion began development work on a cable television system began in 1950 with a trial running in Margate during the summer and after minor modification the system was officially declared open in April 1951 having been incorporated into the "TDUK.1" system.

Two further systems, TDUK.2 and TDUK.3, appeared around 1955/6 in order to provide the new ITA television channel. Channel switching was accomplished via a multi-way selector box seperate from the reciever itself.

The TDUK.2 system was used used for new cable networks, the first channel using the upper sideband of a 4.95MHz carrier and the second using the lower sideband of an 8.45MHz carrier, whilst audio was supplied unmodulated. In addition to television broadcasts the system also provided a number of radio stations.

The TDUK.3 system was used to replace existing TDUk.1 systems and used the lower sideband of a 6.3MHz carrier for one channel whilst the second channel used the upper sideband of a 9.72MHz carrier.

TD.20 - For 625-line distribution. A convertor was also available to convert the Rediffusion channels to a TV standard signal for those who wished to use a standard television reciever instead of renting one of Rediffusion's wired sets.

An almost almost identical looking set, using a 12" (30cm) C.R.T. instead of Rediffuser's 9" C.R.T., was released under the "Mayfair" name at the start of 1949. Like Rediffusion, Mayfair were also located in Wandsworth. In addition, one publication lists a model by "Redifon" which carried the same model number as the Mayfair set ("1/12").

Note that the Rediffuser has a seperate wooden surround that was almost certainly intended to be removed to allow for a 12-inch C.R.T. to be fitted, a trick used by a number of manufacturers including Etronic and Peto Scott.
