1954)
Philips seem to have been the only importer of televisions prior to World War
2. Despite manufacturing radios in England, televisions were manufactured at
the Philips factory at Eindhoven. They demonstrated a set at the 1936 Radiolympia
but it appears that this was never put into production. At the following year's
Radiolympia they again showed just one set, but this time very different to
most others as it used C.R.T.-based projection system to achieve a 20"x16"
picture. Some sets were sold but within a few months Philips were offering to
take the sets back as the CRT's were proving extremely short lived and supplies
of replacements were proving difficult to obtain from Holland.

Shown at the 1937 Radiolympia. Note the squarer cabinet and lack of radio
as compared to later model TEL61. The book "The Setmakers" refers
to a Philips projection set whose C.R.T. was extremely unreliable (as in
lasting only weeks) such that Philips offered to buy the sets back. This
is probably that model.
